Fascias & Soffits Replaced Before Winter

The best time to carry out roof repairs is when there is stable weather. In the UK, of course that is quite hard to predict, but certainly the weather is less volatile if you avoid the winter months, and so you should look to get your fascias and soffits replaced before this time.

Installing fascias and soffits in the summer or autumn allows for longer daylight hours and a more efficient installation, and the weather becomes much more of a factor as we get towards the winter months. Of course in extreme winter weather, piles of snow can prevent work being done on a roof. Roofing contractors can be slowed down by any kind of unpredictable weather, and cold weather in particular can make materials brittle and harder to handle or manoeuvre.

Damp or frozen materials and safety aspects, can inhibit your roofing contractor carrying out the required work, but furthermore, existing problems with your roof can become worse during the winter months, so you should really be looking to carry out repairs and replacements before the bad weather hits. Cracks can get worse in cold weather and moisture ingress can cause big problems with the integrity and structure of your home.

Saving money by getting work done now

A damaged roof can really affect the thermal efficiency of your home and therefore your energy bills. Your boiler is having to work harder to maintain temperatures because of the cold air or moisture coming in through your damaged fascias and soffits, so replacing these in the summer makes absolute sense. Of course, moisture ingress can spread damage too. If your fascias and soffits are rotten through moisture then this can very quickly affect other timber structures in the roof and very soon your problems can multiply.

Inspection is a key element to knowing when to replace your fascias and soffits and certainly the summer and autumn months are a good time to make use of better visibility and access to your roofline. It is important to keep a good eye on the condition of your fascias and soffits, and at Northern Roofline we would recommend PVC products in terms of replacements, as they need no maintenance and will always retain their original appearance.

However, you don’t necessarily need to go for a full and potentially costly replacement if you currently have timber fascias and soffits. So while we talk about it being important to carry out inspections and repairs before the winter months from a practical point of view, that is also the case when it comes to saving money on any work required.

Practical ways to repair your roof

If your timber roofline is in good condition, you can simply overcap the wood with a PVC overlay. This gives you the same benefits as a full PVC replacement. However, if your timbers are rotten, then you will need to go for a full replacement, and this means removing all your old fascia boards and soffits and fitting the new ones. This can also mean temporarily removing roof tiles in order to properly fit the new boards.

So timely inspection and maintenance before winter can avoid all this and can save you pain and expense, as full replacement is more expensive in terms of labour and materials. A proper inspection can also help uncover other problems, such as rotten batons or roofing felt that has deteriorated. Many of these issues can go undetected for months or even years, until they begin to affect the integrity of your home, so carry out these inspections and repair work now, and you can settle in for the winter months safe in the knowledge you have done everything you can to protect your home.
